REALTORS and Social Media: Latest RPR Survey Reveals Trends
CHICAGO (April 23, 2019) – Realtors Property Resource, a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Association of REALTORS, is pleased to announce the results of its 2019 REALTOR® Social and Digital Media Report. The report includes findings from a survey of over 650 REALTORS concerning how they use social and digital media to market themselves and build their businesses. Of 651 REALTORS surveyed, almost 74% indicated that awareness is the main reason they look to social media to boost their marketing tactics. An overwhelming majority of respondents, nearly 65%, plan to commit more time to social and digital media. And just over 62% have more of their marketing budget earmarked towards social media for the coming year. "Social and digital media should play a huge role in any agent's marketing efforts," says Reggie Nicolay, RPR Vice President of Marketing. "Raising awareness of yourself and your services via channels such as Facebook, Instagram and email are the new normal in real estate marketing. It really comes down to fishing where the fish are, and the sea is full of social media users." Facebook and Instagram are the most popular social outlets for REALTORS®. Interestingly, Instagram edged out LinkedIn, which was 2017's second most used platform. Property listings are the most popular form of social media posts for real estate professionals, with local events and buying tips coming in second and third. When it comes to the type of content and format that REALTORS® are posting, photos are the number one choice, followed up by video and other content links. When it comes to digital media, email is far and away the big winner, with over 78% of REALTORS® saying the use it as their digital marketing tool of choice. Texting, videos and eNewsletters rounded out the other top digital media deliverables. 250,000 Real Estate Agents Found New Address at Facebook in 2013, Says N-Play
Jacksonville, FL, December 30, 2013—N-Play, the leading provider of real estate applications on Facebook, reports that 250,000 agents located nationwide have joined its flagship service, the Real Estate Agent Directory ("Directory") for Facebook. Originally launched in the fourth quarter of 2011, the Directory has added 120,000 agents since December 2012, a 90% increase year-over-year. The Directory has become the largest community of agents on any consumer-facing social media platform in the U.S. N-Play estimates one million agents operating in the U.S. have an active Facebook account of which 25% are members of the Directory. Seventy-three million users are 35-64 years old, a demographic sweet spot for real estate. The average agent in the Directory has 430 friends within this prime demographic, compared to 170 friends for the average Facebook user. This results in a friend-of-friend network of over 70,000 real estate consumers per agent. "Building pipelines through social media will be important for agents to remain competitive," said Bloomfield. "As more agents leverage this medium, we will see a dramatic change in the way real estate is marketed for the foreseeable future. Everything agents could offer on traditional websites can now be offered on social media. It's like moving your business from a dead-end street to a busy highway. You're going to get more traffic." The National Association of Realtors' (NAR) establishment of a social media policy for Multiple Listing Services (MLSs) in 2012 set the stage for increased social media use in the real estate community. Internet Data Exchange (IDX), the standard means for displaying real estate listings, permitted MLS participants to display listing information via IDX-compliant solutions on social media. This has opened the door for brokers and agents who want to display listings and offer home search on social media platforms such as Facebook. Since the policy's implementation, over 100 MLS nationwide have approved this use, including eight of the ten largest MLSs in the country. How SCVNGR’s First National Brand Partnership Scored Big During March Madness
The Behind the Social Media Campaign Series is supported by Oneupweb, an award-winning agency specializing in search marketing, social media and design for mid-to-enterprise level brands. SCVNGR is a location-based gaming platform – there are challenges at every venue, and businesses can also "script" their own challenges. Customers can do challenges (take a photo, eat a certain dish) to earn points, which are redeemable for real-world rewards, such as a free drink or 10% off. The Cambridge-based company launched in 2008, and was founded by a 22-year old Princeton dropout who wanted to add a game layer to the world. And that he did. In January 2011, SCVNGR partnered with Buffalo Wild Wings (BWW) — at all 730 of its locations — for a 12-week campaign leading up to March Madness. The competitive game layer of SCVNGR worked well with the BWW patrons, who thrive on competition, community and games. SCVNGR's SVP of Marketing Chris Mahl says that what differentiates SCVNGR from other location-based services is that it's "not a checkin-based service, [but something] that goes further into brand goals [and] consumer goals." The success of the campaign indicates that that may be true. BWW was the first national SCVNGR promotion, and in the first three weeks, the game accrued nearly 30,000 players. By the end, the campaign had 184,000 players at 730 BWW locations. The Concept Interactive agency BFG drove the campaign and helped spread awareness of it via several avenues. BWW had several goals, including generating earned media and consumer engagement, improving customer return rates and, of course, driving revenue. By turning the act of watching games into a game in and of itself, these brand goals were accomplished in a fun, meaningful way. Mahl attributes the success of the BWW promotion to a few things that created a sort of perfect storm for the campaign: Good timing. It revolved around March Madness, when there is a heightened interest in sports and school spirit, even for those who might otherwise not be interested. Excellent staff training. BWW staff played around with SCVNGR for a week before it launched to consumers, so they were invested and well-versed in the game once it launched. They could answer any questions about the app and encourage people to get in the game. Prominent marketing. The BWW campaign was well promoted via Facebook, Twitter, a tab on the BWW Facebook Page, web embeds on the BWW website, in-store television spots, menu inserts, table tents and SCVNGR window clings. These guerilla marketing tactics made it so that when you walked in the door at BWW, there was no way you didn't know what was happening. Plus, the March Madness-obsessed fans are a captive audience, and they were targeted in a comfortable, laid-back environment where they were already hanging out and drinking with friends, so it didn't take much to get them involved. The Campaign BWW set up three custom challenges and offered restaurant rewards for those who completed. Rewards for completed challenges included $5 off (3 points), a free Coca-Cola (20 points) and free wings (30 points). Serving staff, having been trained with the app, were prepared to redeem rewards immediately, so the challenges and redemptions were happening in real time. If someone was hungry and wanted more wings, they could figure out a challenge that would earn them such wings and be much more fun than shelling over some green. BWW's challenges asked people to take pictures of their friends, the sauciest wing in the basket, fans of rival teams and the crowd going wild, to name a few. These photos were shared on the SCVNGR network, and many chose to share them on Facebook and Twitter, too. The custom challenges allowed people to go from being players and participant to becoming "authors" — they weren't just playing SCVNGR, they were "engaging with us" and creating their own adventures, Mahl says. SCVNGR gave them ownership to do what they wanted in order to earn points to unlock badges and rewards. Further, one could find the reward he or she wanted and figure out exactly what challenges needed to be done to get it. This kept people engaged in the game and the app, and spurred people to bring friends into the game, too. Once a player completed the custom challenges scripted by BWW, he became a sort of power user who could create his own challenges. The user-generated challenges that were most popular floated to the top of the list, acting as a sort of crowdsourced filter. As with any crowdsourcing, there's a risk of inappropriate or bizarre material, and though many of the BWW patrons are what Mahl describes as "edgy, passionate and strong personalities," the user-generated challenges went slightly awry. But SCVNGR acted quickly and built a curation system to "keep it clean" and sift through the challenges twice a day to pull out any subpar challenges. The campaign went well beyond the walls of each BWW location, too. A web-based leaderboard showed the point total for users on a national scale, spurring even more competition amongst players vying for the grand prize — a trip to the NBA finals with former Chicago Bulls player and Hall of Famer Scottie Pippen. The Results Here are some statistics from the three-month campaign: Players generated 20,000+ challenges, 15,000 of which were approved (remember the curation filter?). There were 184,000 unique players at 730 nationwide BWW locations. 1 in 3 players returned to play again. On average, users completed 7 challenges, meaning they did all the ones provided by BWW and a few user-generated ones. The campaign generated more than 100 million social impressions via Facebook and Twitter. On average, a player spent 90 seconds per challenge, meaning that BWW saw the equivalent of 3.6 years of brand engagement in its locations during the campaign. "This kind of engagement just doesn't exist," says Mahl, referring to the stats from the BWW campaign. He adds that the campaign went off without a hitch — people were badged, recognized and unlocked their rewards. "Everything worked," he says. To boot, the successful campaign came at a "surprisingly low cost" to BWW, though Mahl would not disclose the exact figure. So what made it click? "[The] BWW [campaign] was well-advertised," says Mahl. "Sometimes you just don't know there's a game. BWW understood that and took the time to properly promote it and invited employees to play first." Further, BWW is what Mahl calls a "socially progressive, community-based place," which lends itself to the SCVNGR model. People come ready to play, with their game faces on. Three months have passed, and BWW is refreshing its campaign as the "Flavor Fanatic Challenge." You Can Now Tag Pages in Facebook Photos
Ever had the urgent need to tag the Coke can you're holding in that beach picnic picture on Facebook? Well, now you can, as the social network has added the ability to tag Pages in Facebook photos. Starting Wednesday (although the feature does not appear to be live yet), users will be able to tag Pages for Brands and Products, as well as People (more options coming soon) in their Facebook photos. Tagged photos will appear in the Photos tab of a Page, rather than on that Page's Wall, and anyone can tag a Page — even if a user hasn't "Liked" it. Page admins can also nix photos from the tab by going into Edit Page > Posting Options > and unchecking "Users can add photos." For those who are concerned about their privacy, Facebook assures us that privacy settings will still apply; if your photos are visible to everyone, everyone will be able to see the tagged snap, and if your photos are set to "only friends," only friends will be able to check out that pic of you standing in front of the local Rite Aid. This move could definitely be beneficial to certain brands. Imagine if people started tagging themselves wearing, say, Levi's jeans. Five Social Software Predictions for 2010 and Beyond
STAMFORD, Conn., February 2, 2010 — Gartner, Inc. has revealed its key predictions on the use of social software and collaboration in the enterprise. These predictions focus on offerings ranging from team collaboration to dynamic social networking applications that offer rich profiles and activity streams. “A lot has happened in a year within the social software and collaboration space. The growing use of platforms such as Twitter and Facebook by business users has resulted in serious enterprise dialogue about procuring social software platforms for the business,” said Mark R. Gilbert, research vice president at Gartner and co-chair of the Portals, Content and Collaboration (PCC) Summit. “Success in social software and collaboration will be characterized by a concerted and collaborative effort between IT and the business.” Gartner offers five key predictions for social software: By 2014, social networking services will replace e-mail as the primary vehicle for interpersonal communications for 20 percent of business users. Greater availability of social networking services both inside and outside the firewall, coupled with changing demographics and work styles will lead 20 percent of users to make a social network the hub of their business communications. During the next several years, most companies will be building out internal social networks and/or allowing business use of personal social network accounts. Social networking will prove to be more effective than e-mail for certain business activities such as status updates and expertise location. “The rigid distinction between e-mail and social networks will erode. E-mail will take on many social attributes, such as contact brokering while social networks will develop richer e-mail capabilities,” said Matt Cain, research vice president at Gartner. “While e-mail is already almost fully penetrated in the corporate space, we expect to see steep growth rates for sales of premises- and cloud-based social networking services. “ Gartner recommends that organizations develop a long-term strategy for provisioning and consuming a rich set of collaboration and social software services, and develop policies governing the use of consumer services for business purposes. Companies should also solicit input from the business community on what collaboration tools would be most helpful. By 2012, over 50 percent of enterprises will use activity streams that include microblogging, but stand-alone enterprise microblogging will have less than 5 percent penetration. The huge popularity of the consumer-microblogging service Twitter, has led many organizations to look for an "enterprise Twitter," that provides microblogging functionality with more control and security features to support internal use between employees. Enterprise users want to use microblogging for many of the same reasons that consumers do to share quick insights, to keep up with what colleagues are doing, to get quick answers to questions and so on. “However, it will be very difficult for microblogging as a stand-alone function to achieve widespread adoption within the enterprise. Twitter's scale is one of the reasons for its popularity,” said Jeffrey Mann, research vice president for Gartner. “When limited to a single enterprise, that same scale is unachievable, reducing the number of users who will find it valuable. Mainstream enterprises are unlikely to adopt standalone, single-purpose microblogging products. Through 2012, over 70 percent of IT-dominated social media initiatives will fail. When it comes to collaboration, IT organizations are accustomed to providing a technology platform (such as, e-mail, IM, Web conferencing) rather than delivering a social solution that targets specific business value. Through 2013, IT organizations will struggle with shifting from providing a platform to delivering a solution. This will result in over a 70 percent failure rate in IT-driven social media initiatives. Fifty percent of business-led social media initiatives will succeed, versus 20 percent of IT-driven initiatives. Enterprises will need to develop entirely new skill sets around designing and delivering social media solutions. Until this happens, failure rates will remain high. A dearth of methods, technologies and tools will impede the design and delivery of social media solutions in the near term. But long term, enterprises will realize that social media is not a "hit or miss" activity naturally prone to high failure rates, and that a calculated approach to social media solution delivery must be an IT competency. At that point, post 2012, the social software market growth will accelerate as will the overall impact of social media on business and society. Within five years, 70 percent of collaboration and communications applications designed on PCs will be modeled after user experience lessons from smartphone collaboration applications. As we move toward three billion phones in the world serving the main purpose of providing communications and collaboration anytime anywhere, Gartner expects more end users to spend significant time experiencing the collaborative tools on these devices. For some of the world, these will be the first or the only applications they use. The experience with these tools for all who use them will enable the user to handle far more conversations within a given amount of time than their PCs simply because they are easier to use. Just as the iPhone impacted user interface design on the desktop, the lessons in the mobile phone collaboration space will dramatically affect PC applications, many of which are derivatives of decades-old platforms based on the PBX or other older collaboration paradigm. “IT organizations should continue to procure leading-edge smartphones for testing and to accumulate knowledge on how the collaboration applications on such devices accomplish business tasks,” said Ken Dulaney, vice president and distinguished analyst at Gartner. “As more organizations consider replacing deskphones with cell phones, they may wish to anchor their collaboration tools also on the cell phone.” Through 2015, only 25 percent of enterprises will routinely utilize social network analysis to improve performance and productivity. Social network analysis is a useful methodology for examining the interaction patterns and information flows that occur among the people and groups in an organization, as well as among business partners and customers. However, when surveys are used for data collection, users may be reluctant to provide accurate responses. When automated tools perform the analysis, users may resent knowing that software is analyzing their behavior. For these reasons, social network analysis will remain an untapped source of insight in most organizations. Before undertaking a social network analysis, Gartner recommends that the organization ensure that it has the trust and buy-in of the people it hopes to include in the analysis in advance. Issues of privacy and confidentiality must be addressed and a determination needs to be made regarding how the information will be used and communicated. Establishing the ground rules upfront will encourage more open and honest participation and reduce the resistance to ongoing relationship monitoring.
