Facebook Likes and Talking About This

June 14 2013

As far as I am concerned, every small business, eatery and restaurant MUST have a Facebook business page not just to draw in fans, but to engage with them. You certainly want likes for your page, but more importantly, you want people talking about your page.

The video below provides a great explanation of why "talking about this" is so important!

LIKES: Simply means at some point, someone clicked the "like" button ONCE. Either directly on a Facebook page or on a website that was promoting that Facebook page.

TALKING ABOUT THIS: This is the actual number of people who are 'engaged' and interacting with that Facebook Page. The people who actually come back to the page after liking the page. This includes activities such as comments, "likes" to a post, "shares," etc. by visitors to the page. I pulled these facts from a post done by Art Jonak. He says:

A good rule of thumb of 'Likes' vs. 'Talking About This' numbers for a Facebook Page:

  • With LESS than 100,000 likes, a great 'talking about this' number is about 10% of the likes.
  • With MORE than 100,000 likes, a great 'talking about this' number is 5% of the likes.

So, if you see 50,000 likes with 500 'talking about this,' that is probably NOT a GURU. If you see 50,000 likes with 5,000 or more 'talking about this,' that's pretty darn good!

Art also says, "Stay social. Don't worry too much about the numbers. However, if you are looking to buy stuff from a 'Facebook guru' who is trying to sell you a course on increasing your 'social media footprint'... then take a second to check their numbers."
