BoxBrownie Wins Pitch Battle; KW Labs Win Hackathon at NAR's iOi Summit
WASHINGTON (August 30, 2018) — The National Association of Realtors® announced that BoxBrownie, an on-demand photo editing service for real estate, and KW Labs, Keller Williams in-house software development arm, won the pitch battle and hackathon, respectively, at NAR's inaugural Investment, Opportunity & Innovation Summit in San Francisco. Software developers, data scientists, designers, marketers and real estate professionals from across the country competed in an artificial intelligence hackathon and a startup pitch battle. Second Century Ventures, NAR's strategic investment arm, hosted the pitch battle between a select group of technology startups focused on real estate. Contestants presented live demos in front of venture capitalists, chief technology officers, chief information officers, technology innovators, brokers and real estate professionals to share ideas and help define the future of real estate. "The vision of Second Century Ventures is to define and deliver the future of the real estate industry by being a catalyst for new technologies, new opportunities, and new talent. The pitch battle and hackathon were an exercise that broadens that vision and brings the leading minds in technology, investors and Realtors® to the table to share ideas and bring the future of real estate into focus," said NAR CEO Bob Goldberg. The pitch battle participants were tasked with delivering a demonstration of a product that will help real estate companies, agents or consumers and outline solutions for the venture capitalists, executives and brokers in the audience. BoxBrownie received the winner-takes-all prize of $15,000. BoxBrownie's demonstration focused on their wide range of services for Realtors® who want to showcase their products with professional photos. KW Labs, the winner of the hackathon, built an app that allows an agent to make a video of a property on a walkthrough. While making the video, the phone will identify the type of room and features in the room, then convert to text, and create a web page with links from auto-generated images that will appear in the video. Hackathon contestants gathered to build innovative products that leverage artificial intelligence to serve Realtors® and determine the impact on the future of real estate. "The iOi hackathon is a cutting-edge collaborative exercise that allowed NAR to work with technology experts to examine, embrace, leverage and be part of the change that surrounds our industry. The hackathon is a piece of my larger strategy as CEO to bring tech firms that many consider to be disruptors under the tent as innovators, and turn them into advocates for our members," said Goldberg. Some example problems that teams explored were ways to improve how agents serve their clients, opportunities for improving home search in the real estate industry and ways agents can maximize their marketing opportunities with less effort. Teams started building their ideas virtually on August 1 and were judged on five different criteria: use of the provided APIs, creativity, functionality, practicality and user experience. The hackathon data set providers included benutech, CRMLS, enodo, Foursquare, Lyrebird, MRED, restb.ai, RPR, SOLARIA labs, the San Francisco Association of Realtors® and TLC engine. NAR Kicks Off Innovation, Opportunity and Investment Summit in San Francisco
WASHINGTON (August 29, 2018) – Over 400 innovators, investors and Realtors® gathered in San Francisco for NAR's inaugural Innovation, Opportunity & Investment Summit, to debate, discuss and collaborate on real estate's most pressing technology issues. During the summit, real estate technology companies, the investment community and business executives joined Realtors® to tackle key technology developments such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality and augmented reality. "Technology is constantly changing real estate and the ways Realtors® and real estate businesses operate. The iOi Summit is integral to my vision to position NAR at the forefront of advocating for technologies that ensure Realtors® are essential to consumers throughout the real estate transaction. I am committed to embracing change and identifying technology tools and future advocates that are Realtor®-friendly and help us advance our members-first mission for years to come," said NAR CEO Bob Goldberg. The first day of programming included California Attorney General Xavier Becerra who delivered a keynote focused on the pressing consumer protection issues in the real estate industry. There are laws and regulations that are outdated that affect the opportunity for consumers to become homebuyers. I am excited to work with entrepreneurs, the tech industry and Realtors® to expand opportunities in the real estate industry and keep up with this ever-changing world," said Becerra. "Artificial intelligence and machine learning are impacting the ways consumers approach their real estate search. Realtors® and innovators are also impacted by these technologies and need to stay in front of policy challenges affecting their businesses. ENCON2016 | Leading the Nation: One Lead at a Time
  ENCON2016 is less than six months away and we're excited to announce the details for our upcoming conference on September 28-30, 2016. This year's theme is "Leading the Nation: One Lead at a Time" and will focus on quality lead generation through the tools available on our platform, improved target marketing, and by leveraging the relationships within our network. We're also making a few changes to the event. First of all, we're switching up the scenery a bit and are heading to the mountains! ENCON2016 is being held at the Park Hyatt Hotel in Beaver Creek, Colorado. This is the best time of year to see the changing of the Aspens in Colorado and we're going to have a front row seat as the hotel overlooks the tree-lined ski resort. Secondly, we are making it a three day event! The first two days will be our typical member conference, but we're adding a third day exclusively for agents in our network. The Active Enterprise Network is proud to send our Managing Partner and Director of Technology, Ori Staub, as a featured speaker to this year’s Inman News Real Estate Connect® NYC Conference.  The session, titled, Brokerage Website Vendor Shoot-out, will focus on brokers looking to enhance and maintain – or in some cases establish – a strong web presence.  The presentation is scheduled for Wednesday, January 12, from 9:20am – 9:55am. I (Jeff Payne) had a chance to speak with Ori about his plans for the conference. “I’ll be approaching my talk from a pure educational perspective,” Ori explained.  He will be discussing how web technology relates to real estate from online branding, to SEO, to designing an entirely customer-focused website based on usability. But, the scope of these parameters changes from company to company. “Different types of companies have different needs,” he says.  “One company could have seven agents while another could have one-hundred and fifty.  Some are independent, some aren’t, and because of that they have to be catered to differently.” Because of these differences Ori will illustrate in broad strokes how to maintain relevance through consistency in branding, avoiding the common mistakes made by brokerages and understanding the features provided by various platforms.  It is his hope that brokers will walk away from this session with a better idea of how to develop and implement a web-based strategy intended to increase online presence and to attract the largest audience of quality users. In order to make the aforementioned changes while running a full-time business, a partner with technological know-how is required.  Choosing one, however, is not something to be taken lightly.  “Again, every company has different needs,” Ori explains.  “It’s a matter of finding the right fit.” This year’s Inman News Real Estate Connect® Conference marks the event’s 15th anniversary and will be held in New York City at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square, from January 12-14. She founded the IBM Super Women's Group, a networking and mentoring group for IBM women in technology. In 2009, "Everything Channel" named Sandy Carter one of the most powerful 100 women in channels. Dr. Ruth David Dr. David is President and CEO of Analytic Services Inc., a not-for-profit corporation providing objective analyses to strengthen national and homeland security. Dr. David was elected into the National Academy of Engineering in 2002 for pioneering the use of digital information technologies for testing, simulations, information processing, and telecommunications for high-reliability applications. From 1995 to 1998, Dr. David was Deputy Director for Science and Technology at the Central Intelligence Agency. As technical advisor to the Director of Central Intelligence, she was responsible for research, development and deployment of technologies spanning the intelligence process. Upon departure from this position, she was awarded the CIA's Distinguished Intelligence Medal. Dr. David serves as a role model to all scientific and technical professionals through outreach via speaking engagements and her dedicated service to the Nation. She is currently serving as the Honorary President of the Council on Sexuality and Aging at the National Sexuality Resource Center.
