"Genius begins great works; labor alone finishes them." — Joseph Joubert

The first Monday of every September, we celebrate workers and their economic and social achievements.

While Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer, autumn doesn't actually begin until September 21st — which gives you plenty of time to get in a few more dips in the lake and one last trek out to the wilderness.

It's no secret that we're big fans of saving time at DocuSign. In fact, we've created the infographic below illustrating some common ways time is squandered — and on the flip side, feats of extreme speed.

But first things first: While the long weekend may be famous for travel and BBQ, we dug up a few lesser-known factoids associated with the holiday. Take a peek at our Labor Day factoids below, and at our "It's About Time" infographic. (We promise it'll be time well spent.)

  • The creators of Labor Day purposely chose for the holiday to fall between two other prominent American holidays — the 4th of July and Thanksgiving.
  • The average work day in the 19th century was 12 hours long, 7 days a week.
  • Labor Day weekend is considered one of the busiest weekends to travel — tens of millions of people opt to get out of town for the long weekend.
  • Thousands of moms will go into labor on Labor Day resulting in about 10,829 babies being born, according to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
  • Labor Day isn't just the unofficial end of summer — it's also the unofficial end of hot dog season. Yes — that's a real thing according to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, Americans typically consume 7 billion hot dogs. That's 818 hot dogs per second!
  • The #LaborDay hashtag has been used on Instagram 1,457,057 times.

Whether you'll be getting out of town or having a staycation, spending time with friends and family is best uninterrupted by paperwork. Here's to celebrating your achievements and soaking up every bit of the holiday and making the most of your Labor Day Weekend.

Happy Labor Day!
