Top Seven Tech Tools You Need As a Real Estate Agent

August 14 2012

homefinder 7techIf you miss the days of back to school supply shopping, we have put together a supply list of tech tools every agent should have as they prepare to enter fall real estate season. While there are no colored markers or shiny folders on this list, we can assure you these tools are just as fun! Use these seven tools to help you seamlessly transition between showings and appointments.

1. Wireless keyboard – When you're on the go, eliminate baggage and leave your laptop at home. Rely on the portability of a tablet and invest in a wireless keyboard that lets you type on your tablet, just as you would your laptop or desktop computer. (Apple Wireless Keyboard, $69.99)

2. Roll-up keyboard cover – Back to school shopping just isn't as fun without throwing in something bright and colorful, so purchase a Spi Roll-up Keyboard cover to protect your new keyboard from spills, dust and water. Its lightweight, bendable and roll-able design is convenient for travel. (Spi Roll-Up Keyboard, $19.99)

3. Wireless printer – This tiny printer produces clear prints for an equally tiny price. Its easy set-up lets you print wirelessly from any device, anywhere. Take this printer in the car and connect to your tablet or laptop, no matter where you are. (Epson NX430 Wireless all-in-one color inkjet printer, $100)

4. Portable scanner – Eliminate the amount of paper collateral you collect throughout the day with the help of a portable scanner. Wand scanners, such as the VuPoint Magic Wand Scanner, are a unique alternative to traditional scanners. This particular handheld scanner simply requires you to roll the wand down the page– no document feeding required. (VuPoint Magic Wand Scanner, $79.99)

5. File sharing – Free file sharing services such as Dropbox lets you instantaneously share large files like new listing photos or blueprints with your buyers, sellers or colleagues. Dropbox lets you migrate files from your laptop to tablet to smartphone to home computer, quick and seamlessly. (Dropbox, Free)

6. Organize receipts – It's no secret that saving and organizing receipts is a pain. If you save your business receipts for expense reporting, take the process digital. Services such as Shoeboxed or ExpenseCloud let you store receipt data online via your smartphone (provided it's equipped with Internet access and a camera). You simply snap and email photos of the print receipts and email it to the provider for storage and reporting. (Shoeboxed, Free; ExpenseCloud, Free)

7. Track mileage – As a real estate agent, it's safe to say you probably spend the majority of your day in your car. If you deduct what you spend on your mileage and gas from your taxes, you can attest that it can be an inconvenience to log your mileage every time you start and turn off your car. Mileage apps such as TripCubby or Milog can do this for you. Simply hit a "start" button when you're ready to begin driving and an "end" button when you've arrived at your destination. The apps' GPS services calculate your total distance. (Trip Cubby, $2.99; Milog, $3.99)
