What Makes a Great Closing Gift?

September 26 2011

A while back on the ReachFactor Facebook page, we asked if our Realtor fans did anything special for clients at closing, and if so what they did. Some took clients out to lunch, others brought over a thoughtful housewarming gift. Whatever the gesture, it was meant to both show gratitude to the client for entrusting them with this transaction and also to be remembered down the road for repeat business and/or referrals.

This week on TechSavvy agent, editor Steve Pacinelli profiles a closing gift he’s really excited about, a little device called a Keyport. Billed as an “Ultimate Keychain Alternative,” this handy little gizmo is about the size of a pack of gum and neatly holds your house, car and other keys — up to six ports. It also has a USB port, a bottle opener and a LED flashlight. Here’s the company’s YouTube promotion: Keyport.

What makes them “strategic closing gifts” is that you can get them engraved with your name and contact info. Of course, you either find this gadget useful and worth ordering for your business, or you don’t. But the TechSavvy agent post brings up an interesting point: Closing gifts should be unique, useful, everyday items that feature your real estate branding. If the branding element is not possible, then be sure that the gift is thoughtful enough to remind the client that it was you who gave it to them. Did your client mention needing something in particular during the transaction? Did your client admire some everyday device you use?

Keep all these questions in mind when you set out to find your strategic closing gift.
