4 Techniques for Generating Blog Topics

May 15 2014

blogEach month, we provide a blogging plan that you can follow. But what if you want to post even more frequently than twice a week? It's extremely difficult to come up with topic ideas! That's why I was so interested in an article I spotted on HubSpot: 7 Quick Ways to Curate Industry Content for Your Blog. I wasn't in love with all their ideas, but I do think a few are worth sharing.

1) Check out trade show blogs.

As I write this, the NAR® Midyear conference is in full swing. Their blog is a great source for ideas an inspiration. And, as HubSpot points out, "Trade show blogs are some of the best places to find content, because they give good signals as to what's changing in your industry and what trends you should keep reading more about."

There's also the Inman Connect conference and NAR® Annual convention which should provide excellent blog fodder. Many MLSs and Associations organize events, as well. Check out your local MLS or Association to see if there's any events coming up and if those events have a blog. (And if they do, offer to contribute a post or two to their blog while you're at it. It's a great way to get your name out there.)

2) Use Google Alerts.

I've actually written about Google Alerts in the past. It's a good way to monitor what's being said about you online and, as it turns out, also a good way to generate blog topics.

Some alerts you might consider creating:

  • residential real estate
  • commercial real estate
  • real estate market
  • real estate data
  • real estate statistic
  • homebuyers
  • home sellers
  • real estate agent
  • real estate [your city]
  • mortgage
  • real estate technology

3) Scan social media.

Social media can be an epic time-suck. Thus, I emphasize "SCAN" social media. Don't fall down the rabbit hole and spend hours watching videos of babies falling asleep in food or cats riding the Roomba. Do that and you'll never have time to actually write your blog post.

As HubSpot points out, your best luck might be on LinkedIn. LinkedIn is strictly business (as a general rule), so you'll weed out a lot of the extraneous noise about breakups, pets, and what people are eating for dinner. Follow brokerage company pages for regular news and updates.

4) Read blogs.

Who are some of your favorite real estate bloggers? Personally, I'm still in mourning for Jay Thompson's real estate blog (although, it should be noted that the blog is still alive, he just isn't writing for it anymore). But I know there are lots of other great real estate bloggers out there.

ActiveRain might give you some ideas. So would the blogs of the "big boys": Zillow, Trulia, realtor.com®. But I'd love to hear your ideas for great local blogs written by real estate agents or brokers. Share your favorites in the comments section below.
