An Overview of Facebook’s Newsfeed Update

March 11 2013

lwolf fb newsfeedLast week, Facebook held a press conference at their famed headquarters in Menlo Park announcing the changes that are being made to the newsfeed in the coming weeks. The common theme amongst all of the representatives, including Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, was simplicity. The new 'mobile inspired UI' will bring a common feel to the Facebook newsfeed regardless of the size of your viewport, achieving a consistent feel on mobile devices, tablets, and PCs.

A major piece of the new design is the customization. Your newsfeed will become a 'personalized newspaper' where you can drill into any topic you wish. It will be visually rich and engaging so you can stay up to date on the friends and businesses you follow.

Some of the notable changes to the structure include:

  • Larger photos in the newsfeed
  • Album facelift
  • Attachments and articles with larger images, prominent titles, longer descriptions and publisher logos
  • Larger thumbnails for pages and businesses that your friends 'Like'
  • A larger integration for third party apps like Pinterest. These apps are great, but people need one spot to display everything at once and that's what they want Facebook to be.
  • Upcoming events that your friends are attending will be more noticeable.

All of these changes have been made to create a newsfeed that is richer, simpler, and filled with things you care about. Facebook will be taking this one step further than the enhancements listed above. You will now be able to use a filter to view different segments of your newsfeed like photos, music, posts made by friends, and posts made by people and businesses you have liked.

For instance, if you wish to use the filter for photos, your newsfeed will be comprised only of photos from people in your network. After you're done viewing photos, you can filter for music and see the music your friends have recently posted.

Right now, it's difficult to say exactly when you'll see the updated newsfeed on your Facebook. They are slowly releasing the updates to small groups of people where they will collect data and further refine it before releasing it to the masses. It's safe to assume you'll be getting your new 'personalized newspaper' in the weeks to come. What do you think about the updated newsfeed? Leave a comment below.
