Emergency Items Every Agent Should Keep in Their Car

September 22 2015

hfinder CarEmergencyAs a Realtor, you spend a great deal of time in your car zooming off to showings, meeting new clients, and running errands for your business. And while your car should always be clean for clients, it should also be prepared for possible emergencies. Mother Nature is unpredictable at best, so it's important to have a car survival kit that can get you through floods, blizzards, basic medical distress, and the occasional flat tire.

General items

The following items make up the basic, day-to-day components of a car safety kit. You should have all of these items readily available in your car.

  • Cell phone charger
  • Bottled water
  • Nonperishable snacks (choose items low in sodium that won't dehydrate you)
  • Duct tape
  • First aid kit
  • Matches
  • Glow sticks
  • All-in-one tool, such as a swiss army knife
  • Paper towels
  • Area maps

Situation: Breakdown

Car breakdowns can and do happen, so it's important to be prepared in case your car experiences any kind of failure. In addition to the general safety kit listed above, it's a good idea to have the following items on-hand.

  • Jumper cables
  • Tire gauge
  • Reflective vest or warning triangles
  • Gas can

Situation: Snow and Ice

If you live in an area that sees a significant amount of snow, you will want to add these pieces to your survival kit when the weather gets cold.

  • Gloves
  • Windshield scraper
  • Warm blanket
  • Snow shovel
  • Sand or cat litter for tire traction
  • Hat or earmuffs
  • Extra clothing

Situation: Storm or Flood

Storms and flash flooding can crop up with very little notice, so make sure you have these items ready for a rainy day.

  • Flashlight and batteries
  • Rain poncho
  • Extra windshield wiper fluid

Bonus items:

Some of these items will take up extra room in the trunk of your car, or require a quick once-over of the user's manual before use, but they would make excellent additions to your car safety pack:

  • Fire extinguisher
  • Road flares
  • AAA or roadside emergency card
  • Towing rope
