Breaking Through Mental Barriers to Drive Success

April 15 2011

Multitaskingman200pxHave you ever sat down to write a to-do list?

Sure, who hasn't? The better question probably is, how many of us actually are able to:

  • Write a realistic to-do list
  • Execute the full list on a regular basis

It's hard, and those of us who do write lists probably focus more on the day-to-day short-term lists of "have-to's" and stray away from anything too far down the road.

What about long-term lists? That can be even more intimidating because it's not just setting down goals for growth; it's having to think through the actionable steps required to get there.

Even with a game plan, why do so many motivated people feel like they hit a wall?

Kim Ades, President of Frame of Mind Coaching and Journal Engineā„¢ Software, calls these mental roadblocks, and believes journaling can be an effective way for coaches, like herself, to drill into what barriers professionals create for themselves. This process has been very effective for Ades and her clients.

Using a great teleconference recording software, Network Telsys, Kim Ades and I recorded a quick interview to introduce how using journal software has been an effective tool for her to help coach real estate professionals and help them to break out of their mental roadblocks.

Listen to this 6-minute recording of our call on the next page. (Warning: the audio will immediately begin playing.)

Audio highlights include:

  • In her experience, many real estate agents could probably list out the 10 things they want to do but aren't. However, with how busy their world is, it's hard to get agents to actually do these 10 things to drive their success. Why is that? Each person is unique and their mindsets vary, but based on the successes Kim has seen with real estate professionals, that once understanding their barriers, people can move past them.
  • Professionals who can get up after taking a blow faster have a much higher level of success. Coaching helps people get back up after a life crisis.

  • The way professionals think fuels their experiences in their life. Success is a function of people's thinking patterns, experiences, beliefs and expectations. We unravel the patterns and puzzle piece that create their existing performance and then figure out where the barriers are. We pinpoint these areas and start to help them break out of this.
  • They look at where the problems really are. They have little to do with their behavior and more to do with their thinking. The thinking has to change before the behaviors.
  • Common pitfalls for real estate professionals are lack of focus, too much competition, not able to engage in lead generation and more.

Have any questions you would like us to ask Kim in our next phone interview? Leave a comment, and it will be our turn to take notes.
