Eco-Friendly Practices for Your Business

February 25 2011

go green new yearMost businesses today want the positive press of operating “green”.  Some think that it’s expensive to do, however most simple steps you can take can actually save money, not to mention protect the environment.

Green marketing is a great start; try paperless marketing practices.  Instead of reams of posters, flyers and mailers, try blogging and e-newsletters to point out your new listings.  Also, the greatest resource that is paperless is your social network.  Keep in mind with social networking, it’s not your friends, but their friends that you really want to reach, so a little common sense is in order.  Don’t post listings every day, and instead use your network to post short articles or links to interesting stories.

If you must use printed materials, use recycled paper.  Use laminated open house signs so that they can be reused over and over again.  Instead of buying new ink cartridges, try refilling them.  It costs less, and you don’t throw away the container every time.  There are plenty of ideas for “greening” your office at http://www.business.gov/start/green-business/.  There are some good ideas, and since you and I paid for this with our taxes why not take advantage of the help.

Obviously, if you can become a mobile agent, that will help.  No need to keep a full office, just rent some conference room or other space if you have to have a meeting.  With today’s technology, all the office equipment you need could fit in your briefcase on the front seat.

A paperless marketing campaign with a mobile office and you save a lot of money.  Does it work?  Well you might not think it’s a big deal, but some people really like the idea of dealing with an environmentally conscious business person.   And your overhead is sure to be less than with a full office cubicle filled with “green” plants.

Of course if you run out of ideas, you can always buy Eco-Joe (http://ecojoekits.com/), the alternative to the plastic St Joseph statues used as good luck charms to sell real estate.  Like the slogan says, “He’s a natural! He won’t harm the earth”.
