The internet is by no means a new frontier, however it is the Wild West out there with bandits a-plenty looking for the first chance to infect your computer and steal your personal information. Much like the Oregon Trail, the internet can lead you to a whole new world of opportunity, but it can also be treacherous. Allow us at My Computer Works to be your guide by teaching you the safest practices for browsing the internet.
Vigilance is gold when surfing the internet. A keen eye must always be used. If you get an email or message from someone posing as your bank or from an institution that you do business with asking for your username and password, do not trust it. Never relinquish your password.
By default, Windows gives you Internet Explorer. However Internet Explorer is nowhere as secure as other browsers like Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome.
Anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-malware and other security programs may be a hassle from time to time, but their protection is vital. These real-time scanners provide a level of security that cannot be matched when roaming the vast wide open of the internet.
Windows releases updates at the beginning of every month. Make sure you allow these updates to install. Ignoring these updates could result in severe consequences.
Toolbars may appear useful and efficient, but they open you up more than you realize, including slowing down your browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, etc.)
Make sure to read the subject on your emails. Never open emails with questionable subjects, even if it's from someone you know. Email accounts are fairly easy to hack. The best way to avoid this situation is by changing your password every so often. Also, do not give your personal information to any unsecure website. Make sure a company is legitimate before giving them any person information. A quick Google search will give you customer reviews and company information you'll need to decide if they're worth your time and/or money.
Although the great wide open of the internet may appear treacherous, we here at My Computer Works stand ready to help you with whatever woes may come your way. If you have any questions, always feel free to contact us.
