Facebook’s new iPad app is a winner!

October 12 2011

Contributor Peter Toner says:

Anyone that used the old Facebook iPhone app found it was slow and annoying – more so when using it on an iPad.

Well now there is no more need to suffer! Facebook just released a whole new iPad Appwhole new iPad App (iTunes link) that will simply blow you away!

The app had been designed from the ground up to create an immersive and fun experience on the tablet, using multitouch gestures. In Facebook’s own words  “Use your fingertips to scroll through your News Feed. Give the screen a swipe to page through albums. Pinch a picture to zoom in”

Features from the Facebook iPad application have also been integrated into the iPhone application.

Facebookers can now take photos or high-definition video from within the app! The images can then be tagged and automatically posted directly into the Facebook news feed.

Photos and videos are given extra prominence and can be viewed full-screen.

Facebook has also integrated Airplay which allows people to share images and video to a large-screen television that is connected to an Apple TV. Facebook Chat is also major component of the app.

Facebook has integrated gaming into the app. If a user is playing a game of Words with Friends while inside the app, Facebook will notify them through a games section of the navigation bar. When the user clicks on the game icon, Facebook automatically sends them off to the built-in Words with Friends app.

Facebook is also making use of location services in a new section called Nearby.

The screen shows a map with little icons of your friends in the area. Facebook’s also gives  people the ability to check-in to their location from within the app from the top right corner of the screen.

You can pinch and zoom into the map to see who’s nearby. Click on a person’s photo and you can leave a comment tied to the location.  This has the potential to be extra creepy so stand by for the usual uproar from Facebook fans trying to deal with another change to their beloved platform …

NOTICE ON ITUNES – TO USERS UPGRADING FROM AN OLDER VERSION: If you’re having trouble starting the app after the upgrade, please delete and reinstall the app – this has been confirmed to solve the issue.

My “aside” prediction: Gaming will explode on the iPad and the soaps on daytime television will suffer another fall in ratings.
