Generate Leads with QR Codes and 'Free Popcorn'

August 23 2011

I have been reading all of the QR code articles – and they are all very good. At the end of this article, I will list a few of my favorites. But I have a different suggestion for QR codes that is based upon a recent experience that I had at the movie theatre with my daughter. I was converted using a QR code tied to Facebook. Let me tell you how so you can think of some creative ways to use QR codes to drive conversions in your business.

(I will also tell you how to get free popcorn at Regal Theatre.)

Today's real estate company has a few business goals that are important feeders. A "feeder" is something that puts energy in your belly so your body can work to accomplish its goals. Leads are feeders. Facebook friends are feeders. Contact names and numbers are feeders. I think of QR codes as the sticky flypaper that attracts consumers that feed your business opportunities. However, in order for the flypaper to be attractive, it needs to smell good.

Case in Point
I took my daughter to a movie. When I arrived at the check out counter with my popcorn, I found a sign from Yahoo! Movie with an offer: "Scan this QR code and get your popcorn for free." So I did.

When I scanned the QR code, it took me to a landing page that invited me to "like" Yahoo! Movie using my Facebook account. This information was not on the attractive sign that talked about free popcorn, but I had already taken the first step – I scanned the QR code. I am a Type A personality – I must finish everything. So I did not abandon my quest for the free popcorn. I typed-in my Facebook username and password and "Liked" the Yahoo! Movie page. Apparently there are 1,310,898 others that did the same thing.

Once I did this, the Facebook page gave me instructions to enter my cell number into the form on the landing page. This sent me a txt message with a bar code that the checkout person scanned. Ta-da: free popcorn!

Real Estate Takeaway
There are places where people go to get real estate information. Yard signs, property flyers, chamber of commerce, real estate magazines, newspapers, third-party listing websites, even your own website. If you are going to use QR codes to generate consumer contact – be sure and connect them with your Facebook page, and be sure to offer them some free popcorn. If they stick to your QR code flypaper, you will have their name (Facebook) and their cell number (popcorn).
