Time to Clean Up Your Social Media Profiles

January 01 2016

social media profile

I confess, I have not done this yet – but it is on my weekend list. We are all probably looking forward to the weekend, and will probably be posting and reading on social media. That is what we all seem to be spending idle time doing these days. It begs the question—have you taken a look at your profile lately?

This all came about because a high school mate of mine is about to become CEO of a family business. When I looked at the Facebook profile to catch up on what was happening in this person's life, I was horrified. I cannot imagine what the employees and business partners of the company will think when they see what I saw.

Here are a couple of things to think about:

Cleaning Up Facebook

Most people do not page back more than a few weeks or months through your posts. However, they will dive deeply through your photos. Feel free to remove photos that you don't like. It's not a big deal.

The biggest issue is with photos and post were you have been tagged. You can untag yourself and even hide those posts from your timeline pretty easily.

Take a look at the pages you "like" – I found that I have liked over 1000 people or companies – it was refreshing to clean them all out. Sometimes it may be better to not display any Likes rather than the wrong one.

LinkedIn

I remember watching a funny viral video that featured an interview scene. The job seeker handed over a resume and was told, "What is this? Don't show me your resume; show me your LinkedIn."

That still resonates with me today. LinkedIn is a place to curate all of your business accomplishments and connections. Make it look good.

Twitter

Twitter may be dead, but the incoming POTUS may be changing that. Just take a look at the people you follow and your posts and unfollow/delete anyone that may not reflect good on you. If you don't post regularly, lock your page.

Hope this helps – Happy New Year!

P.S. Make sure you like your photo and it is a good reflection of you.
