Proverbs are fun.

The idea of a proverb is to use an oft-repeated phrase, frequently metaphorical, to provide advice or a life lesson. For example, 'the pen is mightier than the sword' implies that words and ideas are more effective and persuasive than force. Proverbs are used around the world and can have their own culturally specific meanings as well as universal implications. They can be informing, entertaining or even inspirational.

Let's take a look at some proverbs from around the world and see what real-estate specific lessons we can learn from them.

1. Fortune favors the bold

Meaning: Be courageous.

Real Estate Interpretation: Take risks. Pursue your business with courage and passion and don't let fear stand in your way. Challenge yourself and be bold and business will come your way.

2. Iron that works does not rust

Meaning: Keep moving and you'll avoid becoming stagnant.

Real Estate Interpretation: You can always do better and you can always do more. Complacency will kill your productivity, so you have to keep working even when sales are slow. Write a blog, film a video, get more active on social media, contact a favorite client. There are loads of things that any real estate professional can do to stay busy and avoid complacency.

3. A picture is worth a thousand words

Meaning: Visuals can communicate more effectively than words.

Real Estate Interpretation: Invest in high-quality video and photography for all of your listings. Viewers will be more interested in a listing if they can see the master bedroom at sunrise as opposed to reading some adverb-filled description of it.

4. Don't build a new ship out of old wood

Meaning: Quality matters.

Real Estate Interpretation: Don't nickel and dime your technology. Yon can't run a successful business if you don't have the right technology. That includes having the proper solutions in place to manage your front and back office, and putting the proper tools in your agent's hands that meet their unique needs.

5. Where the dam is lowest, the water first runs over

Meaning: Danger is more likely at weakest points.

Real Estate Interpretation: Review your financial information on a regular basis and identify underperformers and other potential weaknesses. With this knowledge, you can make sound decisions and intervene on items of interest before they affect your business.
