Get Your Social Media Resolution Back on Track in 4 Easy Steps!

February is not only the month of love, but also the official month when New Year’s resolutions often die! Yes, I said it, and yes, you were thinking it. If your resolution this year was to be more active on social media–and you haven’t posted any updates or increased followers–I’m here to help you get back on track!

Step 1: Pump Yourself Up!

By definition, resolutions are “a firm decision to do or not do something.” Decide that you WILL be more active in your social media strategy this year. Don’t let your inner monologue get you down. We all know you are your own worst critic, but cast away the shadows of doubt. You are a confident, and capable real estate professional, ready to conquer the social media landscape!

Something else to keep in mind during your “pep up” phase: don’t be afraid to fail! So what if your first few new posts to Instagram don’t make it to 11 likes? It’s okay! Learning about who your audience is and what they want to see from your content is a learning process.

Step 2: Set Small, Specific Goals

Now that you’re ready to conquer the world and you have yourself all excited, it’s time for the real work to begin! Here is where you need to map out small, specific goals; these are crucial to your success. Often, resolutions are doomed to fail because they are too general, like ‘I want to eat healthier.” How do you define it? How do you measure it? You can’t. You need a goal that is quantitative, yet still easily achieved.

My advice is to start small so you can celebrate the little victories on this journey. For example, you could set a goal to gain 10 new followers on Twitter in one week, or aim to increase your engagement rate by 5%. Each successive week you reach your goal, start to raise the bar, try to get 15 followers in a week, and increase your engagement by 7%.

You may find yourself seeking out new ways to achieve these goals. One week you can increase your following by searching new people to follow who will follow you back; the next week you could experiment with a small ad spend on Twitter. The possibilities for growing your best brand in 2016 are endless with social media marketing. Start slow and increase your confidence week over week; I promise it will be worth it.

Step 3: Plan For Success

By now, you should be amped up and have small, specific goals in place. Now you need a plan, because failing to plan is a plan to fail. This may be the hardest part and setting yourself up for success is crucial!

One of the easiest ways to reinforce your goal is making it part of your daily routine or schedule. You could set a calendar reminder to go off every day at 10:00 AM to schedule your daily content or find new followers to engage with your brand. Place sticky notes in key places to remind yourself “Did I ____ today?” Getting an accountability buddy to help you is a sure-fire way to succeed!

Make the most of your time to make this resolution successful! It only takes 21 days to form a habit. If you’re diligent and stick with it, investing in your social media presence will be a natural part of your daily workflow in no time.

Step 4: Measure Your Success

You know as well as I do that you can’t keep track of your social media resolution in your head; it never turns out the way you think it does. Build processes to track your progress. You’re a real estate professional; ROI is in your blood. Use this innate instinct to your advantage and make the decision to accurately measure your success. When you do this, the sky is truly the limit for where you’re going to take your brand in 2016.
