3 Tips For Making Your Website More Readable

June 19 2011

Guest contributor Elan from Ifbyphone says:

Ifbyphone is a voice based marketing automation company. We help businesses manage, measure, and automate voice communications. For example, you can use Ifbyphone's software to measure which marketing efforts generate the mostMarketcharts phone leads, manage how you distribute "hot leads" to sales reps, and automate follow-up communications.

We are now on at least the 7th iteration of our website since 2005. Getting better at explaining our value proposition on our website has helped us grow to over 50 employees, earn the trust of thousands of customers, and raise millions of dollars from investors.

To help your own business grow, here are 3 tips for making your website easier to read.

1. Try Hubspot's Website Grader to get a feel for your Readability Level grade

One tool we use to improve our website is Hubspot's Website Grader, which now gives our website a rank of 99/100. In additional to some technical recommendations, Website Grader told us our readability level ranked as "Doctoral Degree." We knew we had to simplify how we talk about what we do. Customers shouldn't need a doctoral degree to understand our website.

2. Focus your website's copy on "Business Benefits" instead of "Technical Features"

One of the ways we're working on simplying our message is by writing about benefits instead of features. Why do that? Here's a great example:

A few years ago, this was how we described Ifbyphone:

"Ifbyphone is a hosted voice application and platform company with a simplified approach to the deployment of stand-alone and web-integrated voice services for small and medium sized businesses."

Today, here is how we describe the benefits of Ifbyphone to some target industry verticals:

Healthcare: "Streamline your practice by reducing patient no-shows, generating more appointments and collecting accounts receivable faster."

Home Services: "Effectively measure advertising response rates, improve communication between you and your customers, and reduce administrative costs."

Real Estate: "Ifbyphone for REALTORS® is designed to make the lives of agents and brokers easier and more profitable by improving client and prospect communications"

I don't know about you, but I'd rather collect payments faster, measure advertising effectiveness, and develop more profitable client communications than have a simplified approach for deploying stand alone and web-integrated voice services.

3. Find tools to measure the results

During this process, you need to measure your progress so you can understand if your efforts are paying off. Here are a few metrics to consider:

  • Is there more buzz about your company? Make it easy for influencers to talk about what you do.
  • Is you marketing team driving more web leads? We use our own call tracking software.
  • Is your new Website Grader Readability Level right for your target audience?
