5 Tips to Reach a Healthy Work-Life Balance

In the fast paced world of real estate, it would be an understatement to say it can sometimes be difficult to find balance between work and your personal life. You know how it is, you'll finally decide get take a day off and the "hot lead" that you've been waiting on comes in. So what do you do? Do you spend the rest of your day off managing the lead or do you put it off until tomorrow?

It is situations like that, which make it necessary to be deliberate in finding a healthy work-life balance. Think about it, is pursuing a lead really worth missing your child's soccer game or a family cookout? In a 30 second speech given by Bryan Dyson, former CEO of Coca Cola, he suggests that you should imagine life as a game in which you are juggling five balls in the air. These balls represent the different aspects of your life that need to be balanced; Work, Family, Health, Friends and Spirit.

Dyson goes on to explain that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back. But the other four balls- Family, Health, Friends and Spirit are made of glass. If you were to drop one of these, they would get scuffed, marked, nicked, damaged or even shattered and would never be the same. This is a perfect illustration of why having balance is important and the good news is that achieving it is not as hard as you would think.

Here are 5 ways you can reach a healthy balance between real estate and your life outside of the office:

1. Work with a team

You've heard statements like "Two heads are better than one" or "There's no I in Team." These clichés are clichés for a reason. Stop trying to be everything for everyone because, at the end of the day, you're usually going to be the one stressed out. Instead, team upteam up with someone in your office and figure out a strategy that will allow you both to prosper. This will allow you to take real days off, you know, the kind with NO work. Be sure to choose someone you can trust and who shares your work ethic; it will make you more comfortable knowing that your business is in good hands.

2. Create detailed to-do list

The key to finding balance is by maximizing your time at work so that you can rest easy knowing everything is order once the day is over. Go above the normal list of daily tasks; identifying your long term tasks will keep things from stacking up. Create a list for both short and long-term tasks and organize your time in a way that will allow you to cross off tasks from both lists each day. You can also create lists for tasks that need to be done at home. Share that list with your family, so that your days off do not consist of household chores and other little tasks that generally get put off until you have free time.

3. Remember that it's your schedule

Most people work during the day, which means that the only time they have time to search for a home is in the evening or on the weekends. It's inevitable that these clients and prospects will reach out to their real estate agent after normal office hours. While it is important that you respond to some of these potential leads, it shouldn't become a habit. Remember that being flexible and creating your own schedule is one of the great parts about being a real estate professional. If you have plans for the night, like dinner with friends or a little league game for your kids, let your clients or prospects know that you already have a commitment for the night and that you can get together with them at a later time.

4. The right tools will help

Working smarter, not harder will do wonders for your schedule. This can be easy if you have the right tools. The internet is open all day, every day. Take advantage of this by optimizing your website in a way that it can answer many of the questions that clients and prospects will have while you are out of the office. Think about the most commonly asked questions you recieve during a home search and provide the answers for them on your website. Whether it's neighborhood information, previous listing prices or estimated mortgage prices, your website can be an invaluable resource for your clients when you're taking personal time.

5. Turn the cell phone off once in a while

If you've already implemented the previous four tips, then this one should be a breeze because you know that everything is under control at work. Being on a smart phone has become second nature to all of us, so much so that we don't realize that it's keeping us from having true quality time with the people that are most important. Sit down and enjoy dinner with the family or get some quality "me" time and turn off the cell phone; the business will always be there when you get back.

Finding balance can be simple if you follow these steps. Don't allow work to control your life and remember that the time you spend with your friends and family is far more valuable in the long run.
