brogan_linkedinThis article comes to us from guest contributor Chris Brogan. Now, before the post, we'd like to say that we're not  advocating that you go close your LinkedIn account, too. However, we did find Chris Brogan's perspective interesting. Particularly, we'd like to hear how successful LinkedIn has been for real estate professionals, specifically. Please comment below with your personal experiences.

I just closed my LinkedIn account. Why? Because at least a MONTH ago, I reported a fairly simple problem: I can't seem to add people back when they request that we connect. Oh, that would be about the second primary thing one does on the site. You make a profile and then you connect. That's about it. The connecting part has been broken.

I'm done. I don't care. Whatever.

Why post this? Because I'm forever asked by people why I don't talk much about LinkedIn. Why? Because it hasn't done much for me for business.

Hmmm... I don't want to suggest that Chris's evaluation of his own experience is wrong, but my experience with LinkedIn has been typified by three positive qualities:

1. Old colleagues find me there and connect, and I like that. Past students also connect with me there, which I prefer to connecting with them on Facebook.

2. Whenever I have a problem I can't solve, I browse through my LinkedIn connections. Each of those folks has already initiated or consented to a connection with me, and I've almost always gotten a helpful response when I pinged one with a question.

3. About three times a year, a client who can't find my phone number or email address (!?!?) contacts me via LinkedIn.

For the cost of maintaining my profile ('touching' it once a month or so), I think it's well worth it.

Thanks for that great feedback, Brian. I suspect that there are more people who share your perspective than Chris's. And a very good point about the "cost."

Chris-I "quit" Facebook a few years back, and when I did there was this onslaught of people around me, dear friends included, that began to justify to me why they remained on it. These reasons included: "I am just on there to network" "I just use it to connect with family", etc. Every time this happened, I wondered, "why is it that when I tell people I am not on FB so many feel the need to qualify why they were on it?" Some would even try to argue with me about its benefits despite the fact that I in no way attempted to discuss my reasoning. I think in a lot of ways social media is immediately reflective of a deep human need to connect and if the experience we have in these social spheres is not what we are looking for, we feel inclined to abandon them, despite its arguable benefits. I like how Brian began his response with "I dont want to suggest Chris's evaluation...is wrong" because in this statement he acknowledges the many individualized facets of interaction that can occur on social media sites. Chris ends his post by mentioning the other places "business gets done". I like that. I think too many of us feel social media is more than it is...and that there is one site that is the answer. A colleague of mine who studies and teaches online communications at Rutgers University refers to this as the "If you build it they will come" phenomenon. But 'Field of Dreams' is just a movie and LinkedIn is just a tool. There are and will be many other places where "business gets done".
