apple-tabletThe August 2012 issue of Consumer Reports ranks some important real estate technology tools: Smartphones, laptops, cameras and (our subject today) tablets. We'll be dripping out some of their key findings to help those of you who haven't made these important purchases yet or are looking to upgrade.

Let's talk tablets! With our upcoming webinar, "WOW Your Clients with Your iPad," we've had tablets on the brain. So we were particularly interested in seeing which brands and models Consumer Reports recommended.

iPad Receives Top Score

The third generation 10-inch Apple iPad with 4G and 16GB receives the highest overall score of any tablet Consumer Reports reviewed. Why does this model receive such high marks? Consumer Reports touts the excellent display, realistic colors, great camera, long battery life, and extensive app store. If you already have an iPhone, you should seriously consider leaning in this direction because all of your apps will populate to your iPad and you will not need to learn anything new.

Looking to spend less money? The prior-generation iPad 2 also receives excellent marks and earns the accolade of "the best deal available for the iPad" from Consumer Reports with an overall score of 80 for Wi-Fi only and 82 for 3G.

You can tell from your article that you are very bias towards the iPAD with the bulk of your article on a tablet that scores an 80... While two of Android tablets score higher, 83 & 82 than the iPAD. As a user of the Samsung Galaxy 10.1 tablet I can tell you I can do everything you can do on your iPAD with it comes to the Real Estate Profession.

No mention of the Google Nexus 7 due out shortly? Reviews have been outstanding and I am looking to give it a try at $200!

David, you need to log back in and delete all your duplicates. The system is very slow and takes a long time to post your comments.

I agree somewhat that a pad w/o access could be a paperweight, but that may be changing due to the shift by wireless carriers. With Verizon's move to data share plans and probably the shift by the other guys, people may be able to get away with using their smartphone as their WiFi interface and save on the pad cost.

I have a Google Nexus 7. It performs very well, except when it comes to simple MLS searches. There are many free mls browsers (branded to companies) but they do not allow you to change any information. There are a handful of mobile sites that claim to work beautifully on a mobile device (Kurio and MLS Fusion by Corelogic). Kurio is read only, and Corelogic's MLS Fusion does not work well at all on a touchscreen, and it requires Flash which does not work on Google Chrome.

For entertainment and news, I wouldn't trade the Nexus 7 for an iPod any day. But when it comes to business, either the tablet is lacking, or companies like Corelogic (our MLS provider) have really dropped the ball.
